Pi

The movie "Pi" follows the life of Max, a genius mathematician. Max suffers from a rare physical disorder in which he is prone to migranes, hallucinations, and great discomfort in bright, crowded places. He has lived a major part of his life alone, accompanied only by his number theories. Max believes in 3 universal thories.
1) Mathematics is the language of nature.
2) Everything around us can be represented and understood from numbers.
3) If you graph the numbers in any systems, patterns emerge. Therefore there are patterns everywhere in nature.

Max has been working on perfecting a system that predicts what the stock market will do. Max's research ultimately results in a long string of numbers that makes little sense to him. A financial company is deeply interested in Max's findings, so much so that they give him a rare piece of technology for use on his personal database. Max finds out that his research has lead him into a dangerous path, his theory is now sought after by dangerous wall street fat cats, and by Lenny, an orthodox Jewish follower of the Torah. Lenny's Hasidic Cabalistic sect believe that this long string of numbers is a code sent from God.
This movie was not a 'blockbuster' by any means. It was an independent movie that played only in a small number of theaters in the U.S.. The 'trippy' aspect of the film is what facinates me about it. The occult, mysterious quality of "Pi", is what makes it one of my favorite films.
