Anything you can do, I can do better...

The article I read regarding the movie Alien brought up a very controversial topic; sexuality. While most movies feature men as the "hero," Alien changes things up a bit and has Ripley, a woman, though tomboyish, substitute as that character. Throughout the majority of the film, her character does not play a typical role. In fact, we do not see any sign of feminity in her character besides the scene involving the alien falling on top of her after removing itself from Kane's face. Not only does this go against the audience's expectations, but having Dallas, "the strong and attractive male figure," die in the beginning of the movie throws the audience completely off track. The author then goes on talking about "Mother," as in the computer, who "not only refuses to care for her children but purposely endangers them by diverting the ship to the planet with the aliens." A typical mother stereotype would do the complete opposite which ties into the whole theme of the commentary. It just comes to show, anything a man can do, a woman can do better.
